Didn’t she get the memo?

by Jenny

She doesn’t bark.

She doesn’t cry.

She doesn’t growl.

She doesn’t run to the door to greet strangers.

She doesn’t play.

She doesn’t fetch.

She doesn’t give kisses.

She doesn’t like major appliances.

She doesn’t like loud noises.

She doesn’t like being alone.

All this makes me lament the normal puppyhood that Nanny apparently never experienced. Or makes me angry at the person who took it away from her.

It’s like she doesn’t know how to be a “normal” dog. What do I expect? She’s only been with us for less than a week, and I can’t undo the damage of her past so quickly. So I must remember:

She loves attention.

She loves having her belly rubbed.

She loves napping.

She loves getting kisses.

She loves snuggling.

And every day she is with us, she becomes more relaxed and confident. She smiles and wags her tail. Clearly Nanny knows that her existence now is better than the one she had before; that we are her loving care-givers and she is grateful. The poor little girl has been through so much, what conceit it would be to believe the fact that she is home with us now is the magic salve to cure all her hurts! Yet here I am, fretting over what she isn’t.

Rationally, I know it’s a long road to her wellness. But, just like any good doggie mommy, I want the best for her now.
